Hello Mothers
Many working mums will tell you that the concept of “having it all” is a myth. It doesn’t feel like the world is designed that way. It can feel overwhelming, balancing everything – making sure the kids are thriving at the same time as managing all your work responsibilities so it’s no wonder that 79% of mums feel guilty for not spending enough time with their children, but 57% also feel guilty about not working enough. It can feel like a no-win situation. To check out the full research paper, click here(open in new tab).
Maltesers, in partnership with Comic Relief, is working towards a future where women no longer face injustice. Together, we’re working to lighten the load for working mums and help women thrive.
We don’t have all the answers but here are some of the things that we heard in our research that could help:
- Embrace imperfection & be kind to yourself. It’s okay to not always have it all together.
- You have rights at work and there are lots of resources in and outside your workplace to help you navigate them. Ask your employer early about parental policies, and be prepared to negotiate for flexibility.
- Keep the lines of communication open – let your colleagues and those around you know exactly what you need and keep talking as things change.
- Try not to hide it when things are tough – when you’re vulnerable, you make it easier for everyone to open up.
- Celebrate the positives – think and talk about the incredible changes you’ve been through and all the amazing things you’ve learned.
